Our Story
Erin’s POV
I matched with Ben on Bumble in March 2025. After chatting for a week or so, we met for a coffee date at Radio East. It was Hazel’s Gotcha Day and I planned to take her to the park after, so she went with me. Ben was outside waiting when we arrived. He looked like his pictures (whew 😅) and I could tell he was a little nervous. I remember thinking, “His eyes are very blue”. We got drinks and sat on the patio. Conversation was easy and we talked for a couple of hours about our shared interests, careers, families, movies, and more. He made me laugh and had a very cute smile. Hazel was a fan and he was very sweet with her. We made plans for a second date 😃
Our second date was at Vespaio (RIP - another victim of Austin development). He knows I love Italian, so he consulted Reddit (and ChatGPT probably) for recommendations, gave me a few options, and made a reservation. He scored points for taking the lead and planning! He was at the table when I got there and he looked very handsome and dressed appropriately for the occasion 😄 (If you’ve dated a millennial man in the last decade or so, you know this isn’t always the case 🙃). Dinner was great! He was more relaxed and we learned more about each other. We both love museums, books, movies, and spending time with our dogs. He believes in God, is family-oriented, and wants a family of his own one day. He is also very thoughtful, intelligent, and funny. We got dessert and were one of the last tables to leave. He was a gentleman and walked me to my car. He was caught off guard when I kissed him when we were saying goodbye 😊
We became official about a month later and he proposed at Zilker Botanical Gardens on December 30, 2025. I suspected that he would propose that day because he was very vague about our plans. We went to brunch that morning and I was so nervous I could barely eat. As we explored, I thought back to the first time he cooked for me. He remembered a few flavors/ingredients I liked - mushroom, balsamic, truffle - and used ChatGPT to create a meal that incorporated all three. I was very impressed and touched by his thoughtfulness and intentionality. He continued to be just as thoughtful and caring throughout our relationship. Countless moments like this made me excited to build a life and a family with Ben, knowing that I would always have a caring, loving partner to walk through life with. We eventually found our way to the waterfall. He asked someone to take pictures for us, then got down on one knee. He wrote a very sweet, heartwarming speech about our relationship and our future together. Of course, I said yes 🥰
Ben’s POV
I was nervous before our first dinner. The quiet, all-day kind of nerves that sit in your chest and won’t quite settle. I had already met Erin once for coffee. A short, casual chance to make sure we got along, and it was great. She was beautiful and intelligent, and she brought her dog Hazel, whom I loved immediately. So when we planned our first dinner date at Vespaio, I already knew how much I was hoping this would turn into something more.
I got there early, and I was so visibly nervous that the host took pity on me and brought me a shot of tequila. Sitting across from her, I was struck by how intelligent, grounded, and family-driven she was. She was thoughtful and introspective; she loved history and museums, books and movies. Led by her faith, she had the core values I’d always hoped to find, and I wanted to make a good impression more than I knew how to manage.
I spent most of the date convinced I was bombing. I thought I was awkward. I thought I was too nervous. I thought there was no way I was coming across the way I wanted to. But then I walked her back to her car, and before I had time to overthink anything else, she went in for a kiss. After that, I never looked back.
In the dates and days that followed, I found myself imagining a whole life with her: the home we would build, the places we would go, the quiet nights we would share, the conversations we would keep having for the rest of our lives. I could picture a life full of meaning, curiosity, faith, family, travel, books, movies, museums, and all the ordinary time together that somehow already felt extraordinary.
